Drystone Conversions. A workshop on the Danish coast. A century on, still in the same town.

Here's the promise: every kit we ship comes with a direct phone line to the workshop. Not a ticket system. Not a chatbot. A person who built the same kit and can tell you exactly where the wiring loom clips behind the bulkhead.

We started in 2011 because we couldn't find a conversion kit we'd actually trust in a van we planned to live out of for weeks at a time. So we made our own. The first run was eleven kits, sold to people we knew. By year three we had a proper workshop, a waiting list, and a returns rate so low we stopped tracking it as a metric.

Today there are nine of us. We work from a 600 m² workshop and we ship to customers across Europe. The kit panels are CNC-cut from 18 mm birch ply — not MDF, not composite board. The aluminium extrusions are anodised in-house. Wiring looms are hand-assembled and labelled in three languages. Everything is specced to fit a standard high-roof Transit or Sprinter without modification, though we do bespoke runs for other bases twice a year.

What we don't do: we don't sell off-the-shelf kits without a conversation first. Every order starts with a brief call to confirm the van model, build year, and what you actually need. That takes fifteen minutes and saves everyone three weeks of back-and-forth.

Be part of a community of builders who've trusted these kits since 2011 — men who measure twice, read the full spec sheet, and want to get it right the first time.

Before you order

Questions we get from the workshop floor.

Honest answers from the team in Struer who designed the products. If yours isn't here, call us — we'll work through it on the phone.

01 Are your conversion kits compatible with all Transit sizes?

Most of our kits are rated to specific wheelbase and roof-height variants. The Steel Roof Rack, for instance, is specced to the L2H2 and L3H2 Transit body — it won't fit the L1 short-wheelbase without modification. Before you order, drop us the chassis plate details and we'll confirm fitment. Takes us about ten minutes to check and saves a return.

02 What does the Birch Ply Floor Kit actually include?

You get pre-cut 9 mm Baltic birch panels templated to the Transit load bay floor, a closed-cell foam insulation layer that goes underneath, and all the fasteners. The ply is sanded to 120 grit on the face side — ready for your finish of choice, or you can leave it as-is. No sub-frame fabrication needed. Most people fit it in a day.

03 How does the LiFePO4 100 Ah battery compare to a standard AGM?

The LiFePO4 gives you usable capacity closer to 95 Ah — AGM chemistry hands you maybe 50 Ah before you start damaging the cells with deep discharge. It's also around 60% lighter. Pair it with our Split Charge Relay Kit at 140 A and the battery tops up properly while you're driving. The chemistry is also rated to roughly 2,000 charge cycles at 80% depth of discharge, versus 300-500 for a decent AGM.

04 Will the Split Charge Relay Kit work with a Euro 6 van?

That depends on the alternator management system. Euro 6 Transits and similar vans often run smart alternators that vary voltage in ways a basic relay misreads. Our 140 A kit includes a voltage-sensing relay that handles this, but if you're unsure about your specific model year, tell us — we've worked through most of the common variants and can tell you straight whether it'll play nicely or whether you need a DC-DC charger instead.

05 How long does delivery take, and do you ship outside the UK?

Standard UK delivery runs three to five working days on in-stock items. The Steel Roof Rack and Rock-and-Roll Bed Frame ship on a pallet — allow five working days for those. We ship to most of mainland Europe. Customs and import duties on EU orders are the buyer's responsibility; we mark commercial value accurately on all paperwork, so no surprises at the border.

06 Can I return a kit if it doesn't fit my van?

Yes, within 30 days of delivery, provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Cut or modified panels can't come back — that's on us to be clear about before you order, which is why we ask for chassis details up front. If something genuinely doesn't fit through a measuring error on our end, we sort it at our cost.

07 What warranty do your electrical components carry?

Two years on the LiFePO4 Leisure Battery and the Split Charge Relay Kit against manufacturing defects. The Roof Vent Fan at 4500K carries 18 months. Warranty doesn't cover water ingress from an incorrectly sealed installation — we include a fitting guide with every unit and we're on the phone if you get stuck. Physical damage from a wiring fault on your side isn't covered either, but we'll tell you what happened and how to fix it.

08 Do you offer any installation support or guidance after purchase?

Every kit ships with a printed fitting guide. For anything electrical — the relay kit, the battery, the fan — we include wiring diagrams drawn for the specific products, not generic schematics. If you hit a problem mid-install, call us during workshop hours. We've talked dozens of people through tight spots over the phone and we'd rather do that than have someone wire something backwards.

★★★★★

"Fitted the Drystone full-height cabinet kit into a long-wheelbase Transit last month. The tolerances on the side panels were tighter than I expected — everything aligned first time without shimming. The documentation is straightforward: each step numbered, each torque spec listed. I've done two previous conversions with off-the-shelf components and this is a different level of fit and finish. Bed frame sat perfectly level. No rattles on the first long drive."

"The folding bed mechanism is the part I was most sceptical about. After three months of use it's as smooth as day one — no play in the hinges, no creak. The birch ply is properly finished on all faces, not just the visible ones. That tells you something about how it's made."

"Good kit overall. The electrical mounting panel and the under-bed storage frame went together without issues. I did have to email about one bracket that wasn't in the box — they responded the same afternoon and had the missing part out to me within two days. That kind of response matters. Knocking one star only because the packing list in the instructions didn't match the actual component labels, which caused half an hour of confusion."

"I build furniture for a living, so I'm harder to impress than most. The CNC cutting on the Drystone panels is clean — consistent kerfs, no tear-out on the face veneers. Joinery slots are within half a millimetre across the whole set. Whoever is running their workshop knows what they're doing. I'd have been happy to make this myself, but not for what they're charging."

"Third order from Drystone. Started with the basic platform kit, added the overhead locker set last year, now the full galley unit. Each time the components integrate cleanly with what I already had — no adapting, no gaps. That kind of consistency across product generations isn't common. I'll keep coming back."

★★★☆☆

"The galley unit itself is well made — solid birch frame, the stainless worktop is a good gauge. My issue was delivery: the estimated lead time on the page said ten working days, and mine took nineteen. No proactive update from the team; I had to chase. When I did, they were helpful and apologetic. Product arrived undamaged and went in cleanly. Worth buying, but manage your expectations on timing."
